Appearances
Son Goten (Son-kun)

I like to hang out with my friends and go places. Most people think it’s because I’m looking for adventure like my dear father. Did the thought ever occur to them that I was happy to get away from that stereo type? I bet not. As hard as it is to believe, I’m not my father.
They don’t mean to do it, it’s only natural to categorize people by their appearance. They associate attributes and stereotypes to define one’s personality. Looking at someone they’re only going to see for a short time in their life and then never again, they make this judgment. Let’s say that I am out with my family and someone takes a look at my father and I. In their head they recognize the older man to be the father and I the son because we look so similar. This brings them to the conclusion that because I look like my father I must act and think like him as well. This is a kind of reasoning that scientists used to use to classify things in Mideavil times. The problem was it wasn’t correct. Say if you were to look at a plant and notice that it was small, green, and thin, then you notice a small, green, and thin insect on the plant. Using this reasoning you would come to the conclusion that they are the same. Okay so I guess that’s a bad example, but give me a break, I ain’t no Gohan either!
You know I bet there are a lot of you who say, “Shit, I don’t judge people like that!”. Think again the next time you’re out to get coffee or something and you look at someone. Take note of what you are thinking about this person and compare it to what I said. It doesn’t make you a bad person for thinking that way. Only matters if you act on it. Shit you could be thinking about murdering someone but it wouldn’t be wrong as long as you never acted on it.
Let’s take my mom for example (no she’s not contemplating on killing anyone that I know of). She went through loosing her husband and gaining a son that looked just like him. How I wish that didn’t happen to her! Now she’s got this kid that constantly reminds her of her husband’s death. Before you know it she’s making a little gi for the boy so he can look even more like his dad. She also treats him differently than his older brother. She never as hard on him and never forces him to study. She even trains him to fight while she forbids her eldest son!
I don’t blame her after listening to years of suffering through those thin wooden walls. However I do blame my father for some of it. The selfish bastard had made the decision not to come back to his severely neglected family for the good of the earth. How self centered is that shit? The universe doesn’t revolve around his ass. Shit is going to happen whether or not he is there!
Another point I might add is that the man was ignorant. He was ignorant to the fact that his wife was miserable without him. His son was severely neglected and forced to do things that no child should ever be put into. That’s a form of child abuse. Not to mention the guy fucks his wife and doesn’t even consider that fact that she might be pregnant! Yes another neglected kid.
But I guess everything is all better when he decides to come back for one day to ‘visit’. One day after being gone for seven years ain’t gonna do shit. Well as it turned out, he was there to stay. Hey what happened to him being gone to preserve the earth’s peace? It’s all bull shit. Now this would be the perfect time for him to make amends and oh I don’t know be a part of the family. Wouldn’t that be great? Well it ain’t gonna ever happen, ‘cause nothing can get through his thick skull.
I bet you’re now wondering what’s wrong with Gohan. Absolutely nothing. He’s your average nice guy, great to talk to, polite, hard working, and stable. If you believe that then wow, I’ve got you fooled! I do have to say that he is all that and more but he’s just as dysfunctional as anyone else I know. He takes the passive approach to life by taking the beatings from his mom and trying to forget all the times his dad was gone. His mom constantly beats him over the head with, “Study! Study! Study!”. Really she wants what’s good for him. But hell he’s got it handled and is doing a great job.
As for being neglected, he tries to make up for that by getting a attention from others. Like when he started going to school in the city and did that whole Saiyaman stuff, it was for three reasons. One, to help people. Two, to keep his Saiyajin inheritances from being discovered. Three, for attention. Why do you think he made up all those bad poses to try and be cool? Why did he try so hard to fit in at school. Lucky for him he got involved with Videl, which gave him his healthy outlet for attention.
Oh and one more thing I’ve got to add about my dear brother. I’ve got to ask you, how many guys do you know have Post Tramatic Stress Disorder since the age of four? That means he has regular nightmares and flashbacks from the battles he’s been in and the devastation he’s seen. Think of all the dead he’s seen, up close and personal. I remember him telling me a story about how he buried a village of Namekians after they had been slaughtered by Frieza.
Oh and me? Well after reading all this I think it’s obvious, but I’ll spell it out. I’m neglected by my father, directed by my mother to be exactly like my father, and confused about who I really am. I’ve spent most of my life living in my father’s shadow and not knowing it. I’m an individual. I’m am not the boy that looks like Son Gokuu; I am Son Goten.
So let’s review... Things aren’t what they appear to be. The great savior of the earth, Son Gokuu, is an abusive father and husband and everyone thinks it’s okay. Chichi the wife and mother is miserable trying to pretend to be okay in the present while stuck in the past. Gohan tries to meet the demands of others the best he can while bottling up his past for no one to see. Goten is the ignorant kid who doesn’t know what’s going on and will probably never figure it all out. This is my dysfunctional family... Jaa--!
-Goten
Wellthat interesting... not really what I had in mind but I hope it wasworth it. I tried to base everything that Goten said on the TV show to make my point. My point is things are always going to be messed up even if they appear to be good. Isn’t that just depressing? I didn’t mean for it to be depressing, just real. Well tell me what you think!
